How We Started

Solar East Anglia was founded in 2010 by Ben Boon, long before solar became mainstream in the UK. Ben’s background was in eco-construction and building energy-efficient homes, and this experience sparked his interest in solar.

The business started small, run from Ben’s home in Bury St Edmunds, with the equipment for each job stored in the back of his garage. Since then Solar East Anglia has grown significantly, and the focus has shifted towards large-scale commercial and agricultural installations alongside domestic projects.

What began as a one-man operation is now a full in-house installation team, still based in East Anglia and still led with the same hands-on approach Ben started with.

Ben Boon - Director, Solar East Anglia

Ben is the founder of Solar East Anglia and has been installing solar for over 16 years.

Before moving into solar he worked in construction, specialising in eco-homes, and he remains passionate about nature and environmentally conscious architecture. One of his eco-house projects in Norwich even made it to the finals of the inaugural Making Better Homes Award, in the “Best Use of Renewable Energy” category!

Day to day, Ben is involved in site surveys, quoting, system design, procurement, installation, and customer service, staying close to every project the company takes on.

Sectors We Work In

We’ve installed roof and ground-mounted solar PV systems for farms across Norfolk and Suffolk, including at Greenwell Farms on the Gedgrave Estate, helping reduce energy costs for agricultural operations with high daytime power demands.
Our retail installations include Hatters Home & Style in Bedford and Glasswells in Bury St Edmunds, bringing solar to busy commercial premises without disrupting day-to-day trading.
We’ve worked with manufacturing sites including St Peter’s Brewery in Bungay and Haughley Block Plant in Stowmarket, fitting solar installations designed around the higher energy demands of production facilities.
The roof area on a typical warehouse means larger solar PV systems can be installed without affecting business operations. Our project with Aldiss in Fakenham, Norfolk made use of their large roof space to install a 448kW system, while the site continued operations as normal.
We design residential solar and battery storage systems around household energy use and roof space. Every property is different, so we take the time to understand how a household actually uses power throughout the day before recommending a system size or layout.

Solar Installation FAQs

If you can’t find the answer to your questions in our FAQ section, please feel free to reach out to us. We are always happy to assist you and provide the information you need so give us a ring, drop us an email, or fill out our contact form, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Does it cost anything to get a survey or quote?

We employ our own installers in-house. The only exception is one of our electrical contractors, who we’ve worked alongside for over 15 years!

We aim to respond to enquiries as soon as they come in. Callouts are typically attended within 24 to 48 hours, and inverter replacements are carried out within two working days.

Yes, once your system is installed and fully commissioned we will guide you through the process of export tariffs.

As our installations are certified under the Flexi-Orb (MCS equivalent) scheme, you’ll meet the requirements needed to apply for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). This means you can be paid for any surplus electricity your system exports back to the grid.

Panels come with a manufacturer’s warranty of 25 to 30 years depending on brand, and batteries and inverters carry a 10-year warranty depending on brand.

All our installations also come with a 2-year workmanship warranty from us directly.

Lead times are generally around 2 to 4 weeks, though this can vary depending on the time of year.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions we come across. Solar has come down significantly in cost over the years, and it’s now a realistic option for far more homes and businesses than it once was.

Take a look through our recently completed projects to see the payback periods. Typically our commercial and agricultural solar installations have a payback time of between 2-4 years.

By installing solar panels, you can significantly reduce your grid reliance and electricity bills. The exact savings depend on your energy consumption, but many of our customers in Suffolk and Norfolk see reductions of up to 70%.

Most buildings in East Anglia are well-suited for solar installations. Our team will assess your premises to determine the best solution for optimal energy generation.

If we don’t think solar is right for you, we’ll let you know.

The installation process typically takes 1-3 weeks, depending on the size of the system and weather conditions. Our team works efficiently to minimise disruption to your business.

In most cases the answer is no. Installation of solar panels fall under permitted development rights.

Solar panels are made with self cleaning glass so in most cases they don’t need regular cleaning. If however you are in a particularly dusty area then your solar panels may need some cleaning.

Typically commercial solar installations cost anywhere from £600-£900 per Kw fully installed.
