Disconnection
The system is safely isolated and disconnected by our NICEIC certified electricians.
Panel removal
Panels are carefully removed and prepared for storage, reuse or recycling.
Hardware removal
Mounting structures, cabling, inverters and batteries are stripped out and removed from site.
Site Restoration
For roof-mounted solar, we ensure roofs are made watertight and restored, with no visible trace of the removed hardware. For ground-mounted and agricultural solar we ensure sites are returned to their original condition.
Reinstallation
Where the removal is temporary, we reinstall and recommission the system when you are ready.
What Happens to Your Solar Panels After We Remove Them?
What happens to your solar panels after removal depends on why they came down. Where possible, we test and clean panels for reuse, either back on your own site or elsewhere. Where panels have reached end of life or are no longer viable, we recycle them responsibly through licensed waste partners.

Who is responsible for decommissioning a solar installation?
Responsibility for removing solar panels generally sits with the system owner, whether that’s a homeowner, landowner, or business.
We manage the practical and regulatory side of the process on your behalf, including DNO notification and waste documentation.
What happens to solar panels after removal?
Solar panels fall under WEEE Category 14 (photovoltaic panels), meaning they must be disposed of through approved waste electrical recycling routes if not reused. We handle this as part of the decommissioning process.
What about legacy Feed-in Tariff (FiT) installations?
If your system is still receiving FiT payments, removing panels can affect your tariff. We’d recommend checking with your FiT licensee or Ofgem before permanent removal, and we’re happy to advise on timing where reinstallation is planned.
Do I need planning permission to remove solar panels?
In most cases, no, removal itself doesn’t require permission. However, we always check your original planning consent as part of our pre-removal assessment, particularly for listed buildings or larger commercial sites.
Can panels be reinstalled after roof work?
Yes. For temporary removals, we store your panels safely and reinstall and recommission them once the roof or site work is complete.
When should I start thinking about the end of life plan for my solar panels?
We recommend thinking about decommissioning solar panels as early as possible, ideally at the design and installation stage, rather than waiting until a system is failing or already causing problems.
For solar farms and commercial sites in particular, having a decommissioning plan in place from the outset makes future repowering, land use changes or end-of-life removal far more straightforward, and is often expected as part of planning consent.
If you didn’t plan for it at the outset, it’s still worth getting in touch well before you expect to need removal, so we can assess the site and advise on timescales.
